KRAMERBOOKS & AFTERWORDS CAFE & GRILL
Dupont Circle, Northwest Washington, D.C. (MAP THREE)
CATEGORY shops & services
An independent bookstore, Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe & Grill is the social and literary gathering place in the area for locals, suburbanites, and visitors, and has been since it opened in 1976. However, when it’s not too crowded, you could spend forever here and not miss the outside world. When it is crowded, just take a deep breath and fold into yourself. It will be worth it: Come just to browse, and enjoy lots of recommendations from the well-read staff; come for that first date; or come for a place just to hang solo.
The café, with indoor-outdoor seating, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. On the eclectic menu, on the interesting side, you will have choices such as Gary’s Jamaican Curried Goat, short rib potpie, the Barack Obamlet, and grilled Tuscan baby lamb chops. On the comfort side, what about some mac and cheese? And for your sweet tooth, there’s banana–chocolate chip cake. When sharing is your bellwether for a potential love interest or even a good friendship, go for the Sharezies appetizers. If you’d like a glass of wine, waiters will suggest an appropriate pairing for your order. (With 25 wines by the glass and bottle and 18 draft beers, your choices are wide-ranging.)
The café noise level, particularly when it’s busy, can be high. But a trip to Kramerbooks is still worth it. Come again and again, and you’ll have some peaceful times, too.
